We met at Silvia Thornton's home.

Attendees: Silvia Thornton, Linda Disosway, Mary Wright, Vet and Nancy Ferro.

We talked about Intellectual Property Law in relationship to copyright and how it effects us as artists. Especially when we work with commissions and are asked to put specific imagery into the piece.

Vet reported on the Melting Point Show at the Art Centre of Plano. A great reception and turnout with three pieces selling:

Melting Point - Art Centre of Plano

Pictures from the installation of the Melting Point show. I'm using a new photo service so I might have to adjust this post. These were taken before so many people starting milling around. There was beautiful weather for a opening and many people turned out for this exhibit.

This installation will be up through May 8. Fifteen percent of sales proceeds will be donated by the artists to Haitian relief.

Caryl will be doing an encaustic wax demonstration of her collaging process incorporating some of her original materials at 7:00

The encaustics evolved from the monoprints I have been creating over the past 14 years. They are essentially collages using wax as an adherent. I also use the wax to paint areas of the collage. When I construct my monoprints, I often use found objects of flat metal, plastic or wood with unusual textures and shapes to emboss my plates. I now use these same textures and shapes in my encaustics in a variety of ways. Sometimes, I will cut up my monoprints to basically recycle them, using the chosen portions for collage purposes. In addition, I make my own fabric designs on raw canvas using the before-mentioned found objects as stencils, spray painting the canvas with fabric dyes. I use these pieces of cloth in my collages as well. In fact, I use whatever I can find that interests me, a real recycling endeavor, for collaging, stenciling, stamping, tracing, etc. I have been a fine art printmaker since 1996, making mostly monoprints in my home studio in Plano,Texas. I started my art education at the Art Student's League in New York City during high school, studied a year at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts and received my BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture in New York City in 1975. After four children and a freelance photography business, I went back to my art full time. Since then, my prints have been in juried shows in museums, galleries, universities and art centers all over the country. Just last year I discovered The Encaustic Center in Richardson, Texas and my passion for encaustics came alive! I am tremendously excited by what is for me a new medium, and I hope y'all enjoy looking at my encaustic collage/paintings as much as I have enjoyed creating them!

Texas Wax Logo Competition

RULES & ENTRY PROCEDURE

Texas Wax, a Texas non-profit arts organization, invites you to submit an entry to its Logo Competition. We appreciate your participation and wish you good luck!

CONCEPT OF COMPETITION

Artwork should embody the spirit and mission statement of Texas Wax (please see below). It will become the visual identification for the Texas Wax non-profit entity and will be the property of Texas Wax. Selected artwork will be used as the primary logo for the organization on its website and other marketing materials.

RULES OF COMPETITION

1. Submit original artwork or comprehensive layouts. The work must be original. Design must incorporate original ideas of the artist. Because the artwork will receive widespread exposure, the design may not be a close derivative of an existing logo.

2. Entrants are encouraged to include with their entries a brief explanation of how the design of the logo reflects Texas Wax. The logo should be suitable for adaptation to a variety of formats, such as the Texas Wax printed materials, website, etc. The logo should maintain its appearance well in different sizes. The logo must work in black and white, grayscale, and in color. The logo should incorporate the name "Texas Wax” and may, but is not required, to include the words “Encaustic Arts.”

3. Board members and officers of Texas Wax are NOT ELIGIBLE to participate. All Associate Members of Texas Wax are eligible and encouraged to participate. It is not necessary however to be an Associate Member of Texas Wax to submit an entry.

4. The artist agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Texas Wax LLC from and against any damages or losses sustained as a result of any design that is not original. By submitting an entry the artist certifies that he/she is the author of the material submitted to Texas Wax and that if the entry is selected, Texas Wax and its licensees may reproduce, distribute, publish, display, edit, modify, create derivative works and otherwise use the material for any purpose in any form and on any media. By submitting an entry the artist further agrees if his/her entry is selected he/she will assign free of charge all exclusive and transferable rights to use, publish, advertise, copy, modify, alter and reproduce the logo in any possible manner (commercial and non-commercial).

JUDGES

Texas Wax will select judges for the competition that may include representatives from the Texas Wax board, professional graphic designers and representatives from the arts community. Judges will not know the identity of the entrants and will base their decision solely on the artistic merit of the entry.

AWARDS

The winning artist will receive a $250 cash award and will be identified on the Texas Wax website with a link to the artist’s website, if requested.

ELIGIBILITY

1. To be eligible to win the $250 cash award, entrants must be 18 years of age or older and reside in the state of Texas at the time of the competition.

2. Entries submitted must be the original artwork or design of the entrant.

3. Each entry should contain the design of the logo, including any associated lettering. Each entry must include the entry form (below) with the following information: name, address, email, phone number, and signature.

4. Entries should be submitted as jpeg, tiff or eps files and should not exceed 3MB in size.

5. There are no fees to submit an entry. Limit one logo submission per person.

CALENDAR

All entries must be emailed by March 1, 2010 to Sharon Kyle Kuhn of Texas Wax at: bay6studio@gmail.com. In lieu of email submissions, digital files may be sent on a CD to Sharon Kyle Kuhn at: 5305 Bolm Rd, Unit6, Austin, TX 78721. Mailed entries must be postmarked by March 1, 2010 to be considered.

Winning artwork and artist will be announced. All entrants will be notified by email when judging is completed.

Plano Art Centre - Deanna is still trying to get information from them
on the particulars, but the dates of the show are April 9 - May 8.

The fee for the show will come to around $300 and will be split among
the participants. We decided to find a juror for the show and pay him
or her from $100-150. Deanna will send out more information soon.

SHOW DETAILS
“El Corazón”: Using the broad theme of “El Corazón” this exhibition will explore the growing impact and influence of Hispanic art and culture in the United States. This gives us the opportunity to express the spirit of the heart, alternately heavy, light-hearted or whimsical.

ELIGIBILITY: This call for submission is open to all residents of the U.S. This is a juried exhibition for artists working in all traditional and non- traditional 2D and 3D media. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. Note: Crafts, kit work or reproductions after original works in other media (such as giclees), unless used as part of a mixed media work, will not be considered. Oversize Work, Assemblages and Installations are welcome at the discretion of Eclectic Expressions.

SUBMISSIONS AND FEES:
Only original works may be submitted. They must be in a .jpg file format, online or by mailed CD/DVD only. CDs will not be returned. No work done in class or under supervision may be submitted.

Eclectic Expressions prefers an email entry and will accept a mailed CD. All entry fees are non-refundable. Cost of Entry is $20.00 for up to three (3) pieces. All entries must be received by 5pm, January 25, 2010.

Luminous Layers

There is a new juried show for encaustic painters coming up soon in Oregon. The title of the show is Luminous Layers, Exploring Contemporary Encaustic.

Twenty artists were chosen and twenty more will be juried in for the show to be held in June,2010.

The next meeting will be at Deanna Wood’s studio in Sanger, January 17th. No December meeting.

Peggy discussed the possibility (very preliminary) of proposing a group show at PFAMily Arts, a new performing and visual arts center in the Lakeside shopping/dining development in Plano. www.pfamilyarts.org (Next to Weir’s on Preston Road). It would be helpful if members could send some recent examples of their work (reasonable file sizes, please) to Peggy pegep@tx.rr.com, so that she can make a presentation to the director of the facility.

Deanna Wood said that she would be following up on a possible show at the ArtCenter of Plano.
Junanne Peck and Peggy Epner will drive to Kilgore on Dec. 10 to pick up work from the Alchemy of Encaustic show. Please make arrangements with them to get your work. Donations will be accepted for gas and packing materials.

There was an impromptu discussion about materials and marketing between members.

VET is hosting a “Make It & Take It” studio day on Dec 5, 12 - 5pm. 235 Murray St., Dallas.

Linda Disosway is giving a shibori workshop at the Arboretum on Dec. 12.

Deanna Wood announced a Holiday Bazaar at the Encaustic Center Dec. 13, 11-3pm. There is still space available for selling small handmade goods.

Karen Chaussabel and Susan Sponsler currently have a show “Two Journeys” at the Encaustic Center.

Peggy Epner has work with several other artists at PFAMily Arts in Plano and will have work in a group show opening at the Bath House on Dec. 5.

The McKinney Avenue Contemporary is offering free membership to artists who create an ornament to auction at their Blue Yule event. www.the-mac.org

Encaustic Methods and Techniques Exhibit at Tarrant County College Southeast Campus

We had a beautiful reception at Tarrant County College Southeast Campus on September 3rd. The exhibit will be on display until October 8th. The exhibition is located in The Art Corridor II on the second floor of the main building at the TCC Southeast Campus, 2100 Southeast Parkway, Arlington, Texas 76018. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. and Friday & Saturday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Twenty-one of the Texas Wax/Dallas artists are represented and there are over fifty pieces to view. The exhibition has been featured in the Star Telegram, Dallas Observer, the TCC newspaper The Collegian, and TCC website (www.tccd.edu). Come see what the "buzz" is about!

Membership dues
August 17 deadline to pay or name will be removed from website. (Addendum—Marilyn is not removing any names at this time…) But please if you have not paid sign up thru the website ASAP.

Austin Group Meeting September 19.
All chapters invited. Austin members will present their work, a light lunch will be served 10:30-1:30 p.m. Location: TBD (perhaps Bay6 Gallery and Studios OR Sharon’s house...Hope lots of people from Dallas can come!!

November 7: "10" in Austin (fund raiser show—one night only)
No entry fee. Prices start at $100. 80% to the artist, 20% to TexasWax.

The committees will be in charge of how the proceeds (as with all money) will be spent. Final approval of treasurer and president is always necessary

All pieces s/be 10" x 10" x 2" & address the title "10" Enter up to 5 pieces. Only requirement beyond size is that member has paid dues.

Sharon to put final prospectus out early next week.

TEXASWAX Board Members to be announced very soon!!!
Again the committee chairs will decide where and how funds are to be spent…annual shows, groups shows, individual shows, etc. will fall under programming chair/committee....education is another committee chair...as is communications (advertising, website, promotions, etc.) and then development will be in charge of obtaining more funds when we need them...through grants, donors, membership, etc. Each year we are eligible to elect a new treasurer (in any city) to maintain the account...approve, etc...

Most of the Board members/committee chairs have been chosen and will be announced once the at large position is filled.

Global Swarming:
Deanna is currently finalizing the design of the postcard and will keep us updated. We will have costs to share from reception, postcards and special hardware purchased to hang the show.

All artwork hangs until end of show. The artwork is for sale. TDG takes 10%. They will close out books monthly and issue checks.

Janet is trying to shop the showas well and believes that discussion is in order for future shows.

Other issues:
Discussed terms for artist compensation and how we need to be very thorough when securing a show as to details of the venue’s policies regarding time frame of payment. Commissions, credit card fees, etc… this is the wake of the Degrees show where such issues/problems arose.

Also discussed how we need to take advantage of the TexasWax (State) website and to be thinking about what we post there as well as/vs. our Dallas site/blogspot…

Teri Lueders encouraged members to sign up to the LinkedIn Texas Wax group. The point of the LinkedIn group is so that we can share our unique business contacts for the purposes of networking, and that once you join, you should be sure and request LinkedIn connections with other members and accept any requests you receive from other Texas Wax members, too. That way we can all can leverage the strength of LinkedIn and possibly take advantage of new business opportunities.

We need a volunteer to host October 18 meeting.

Call for Submissions

Fifth Annual Encaustic Exhibition – March 2010

Conrad Wilde Gallery is reviewing submissions from artists working in the encaustic medium for inclusion in our Fifth Annual Encaustic Invitational to be held March, 6th 2010 through March 27th 2010.

Eligibility
• All 2D and 3D work that is hot wax-based is eligible.
• All work must be ready-to-exhibit with appropriate hardware.
• All works submitted must be available for sale.
• Any framed work that is accepted, frames must be approved by curator prior to delivery.
• All works submitted must be consistent with our selection criteria as described in our “General Call for Submissions” at the following website address: www.conradwildegallery.com/submissions.html

Submission Instructions

• Include 5-10 images of eligible work on CD Rom (4x6 jpeg 350dpi). Include detail images when helpful. Please include pictures of framing if applicable.
• Include image list identifying all images. Indicate: Artist Name, Date, Title, Medium, and Price.
• Include Artist Statement and Resume.
• A $35 non-refundable submission fee.
• Complete submission packages should be delivered or mailed to Conrad Wilde Gallery, Attn: 5th Annual Encaustic Invitational.
• All submissions must be received no later than October 25, 2009.

Submission Guidelines
Under no circumstances will the gallery accept walk-in appointments, give live portfolio reviews, or accept original artworks during the initial submission review process. Encaustic Methods: TexasWAX/Dallas
Brett brought information about the Encaustic Methods: TexasWAX/Dallas exhibit at Tarrant County College.

Brett took some of the work and will get more at the closing of the Meltdown exhibit at the Art Hotel.

They will install at TCC on 8/11, most likely in the evening. If you’d like to help, email Brett at western26 at msn.com

Also email Brett your resume and statement, and let him know if you need him to pick up your work from the Art Hotel.

Plano Art Centre
Charlotte mentioned that she’d spoken to someone at the Plano Art Centre and they wanted us to exhibit and Deanna had, too. Deanna sent in a proposal for the group requesting the April 9 – May 8, 2010 slot in their large gallery.

They provide postcards up to a certain quantity and we can pay for extras if we want.

They also provide food and beverage for the reception.

They take a 25% commission on sales.

They hang the show but we can have it curated or juried if we want.

They say there’s no fee for using the space, but they do have a hanging and lighting fee and they say it usually stays below $300.

There was discussion about confusion over some of the guidelines for exhibitions. Please read and follow the prospectus that is provided.

Global Swarming
Remember that August 1 is the deadline to send your jpgs to Janet. The prospectus is available on the files section of the Google group site.

Janet is trying to set up something that would be at the MAC during the exhibition.

Collaboration exhibit at Art Hotel
To accommodate some of the collaborative pieces, Janet is talking with Joanna at Art Hotel to have an exhibition in October of the collaborative work that fits the Global Swarming theme.

Silvia Thornton has work at Haley Henman.

Mary Wright and Patty Rooney have work in the VAST 125-Mile Exhibition at TWU in Denton. And Mary’s piece won an award.

Deanna Wood and Trayc Claybrook will have some of their Waxy Buildup work in a show called Women’s Work…? at the Bristol Community College in Fall River, MA.

Junanne Peck has work in the TVAA show in Dallas and Décor in North Dallas.

Meeting held of the Arthotel Gallery, Dallas.

Artwork for show current show delivered.

A large portion of the meeting was devoted to the future of our Texas Wax Dallas group. Ivonne Acero attended a meeting June 18 in Austin with the Austin Wax group. They have developed an infrastructure that covers their mission, organizational charting, non-profit status and registration of the Texas Wax name. We (Dallas) have been offered the opportunity to join with the Austin group with some of the following benefits: executive committee seats, new chapter status, annual group show, fund raising opportunities, web presence, workshops, liability insurance and annual $35 dues.

There was much discussion of the Dallas benefit packet, obligations, levels of participation, value of $35 fee and distribution of funds collected. Also questions on use of name with or without joining, and impact of individual support of state wide groups. There was an informal vote and overall agreement to join the Austin group, but to get more information about specific structure and benefits.

Ivonne collected questions that were raised and will be send then to Sharon for review and response. It was requested that she come to Dallas and meet with the Dallas group.

Global Swarming show details and clarification discussed. Collaborative pieces count as 1 piece for each artist that creates artwork. Hexagon shapes not mandatory. Art work submitted should reflect theme of the show.

Brett announced and handed out information regarding upcoming Tarrant County show in August. Artwork to be delivered at our next meeting Sunday, July 19 at the Encaustic Center, Richardson.

Thanks to Ivonne for hosting the meeting and for taking minutes!

Meeting started at 1:30 after most of the attendees arrived. Members present were Teri Lueders, Ivonne Acero, Peggy Epner, Silvia Thornton, Diane Dorn, Linda Disosway, Juliana Robles, Mary White, Karen Chaussabel, Michelle Pryor, Deanna Wood, Patty Rooney, Junanne Peck, Susan Sponsler, Rhonda Daniel, VET.

After each member introduction VET took the floor to talk and give details about the next show in the agenda, Melt Down at the Art Hotel Gallery. She walked us through a hand-out with dates and specifics about the show. Deadline is June 14th; VET will be doing a Calendar update. Please refer to it for specific dates and details.

Next we talked about the Degrees show in Houston. Deanna did not accept any reimbursement, but asked if somebody could pick and pack the show to bring it to Dallas. Diane Dorn will get back to us to see if she can do it. If you think you can pick up the show this coming Sunday May 31st at 4:00 pm, please contact Deanna Wood.

Deanna Wood made a request about someone from our group to meet with representatives from the other groups in Austin on June 18. The meeting will be about the future of TexasWAX as a whole, including non-profit status. Ivonne Acero offered herself, she will be checking her calendar and getting back to Deanna. If you would like to attend, please talk to Deanna. Becoming a non-profit will be very beneficial for us for grants, scholarships, money to go to conventions, education, etc.

Next we talked about the show that Brett organized for us at Tarrant County College, Encaustic Methods- TexasWAX/Dallas. Since Brett was absent, Deanna and VET went ahead and gave the details. Sept 10th and 11th is the installation and you can deliver your pieces either at the July meeting or coordinate with Brett for delivery. We also spoke about whether it would be nice to have demonstrations and/or a talk for students. The reception is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 3, at 4:00 pm.

Next we talk about Janet Reynolds’ “ Global Swarming." There are two different openings one at the state fair: Opens Sept 4th and delivery of artwork is August 1st. There will be a second opening September 12 & 13. Please refer to calendar.

And last but not least we spoke about the Kilgore College show. Delivery of artwork is Oct 29th and opens in November 2nd.

As you see there is a lot going on. Next meeting will be at the Art Hotel, 1112 S. Akard
Dallas, TX 75215. We will deliver our artwork for the Melt Down show at that time.

The weather was not the only thing that was hot in Houston this weekend. Saturday evening, May 9th, from 7-9 pm, the M² Gallery was filled with patrons and artists visiting and viewing the texasWAX exhibition entitled °degrees°. The exhibit featured artists from all of the texasWAX groups: Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Thank you to the M² Gallery for such a lovely space and reception. The "Working in Wax" show, a national juried show opens at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, CA on May 3, which is today. It will be up through June 21. Eileen P. Goldenberg was the juror for the show.

Texas Wax-Dallas member, Carolyn Fox-Hearne, has three pieces in this prestigious show. Congratulations, Carolyn on representing us so well. Some members of other chapters of TX are also included, but I do not have a listing currently.

Other TexasWAX members that got in the show are Julia Koivumaa (Houston), Sharon Kyle Kuhn (Austin), and Marilyn Fenn (Austin). Congratulations!

Meeting minutes - April 19, 2009

We met at The Encaustic Center in Richardson.

Present were: Peggy Epner, Diane Dorn, Mary Wright, VET, Trayc Claybrook, Janet Reynolds, Charlotte Cornett, Silvia Thornton, Junanne Peck, Patty Rooney, Michelle Pryor, Juliana Robles, Cheryl McClure, Carolyn Fox-Hearne, Bibi Gill, Ivonne Acero, Bonny Leibowitz, and Deanna Wood.

We collected the work for the Degrees show in Houston. Deanna is going to deliver it to the gallery on Sunday, May 3rd.

Each exhibiting artist is responsible for $3 for the postcards and $15 for food. Deanna collected the postcard money and some food money, since the finalized food cost wasn't known at the time.

The opening exhibit for Degrees is Saturday, May 9th at Gallery M Squared. I hope everybody can make it to Houston!

VET talked about Melt Down, the Art Hotel show coming up this summer. She'll send more info soon, but this is the preliminary info:
The show will be in July at the Art Hotel, 1112 S. Akard, Dallas.
Bring artwork to the June meeting that VET is hosting at the Art Hotel.
VET or the gallery owner will curate from images (more info to come).
She's going to work on setting up a workshop to tie in to the show.
The show will be up for a month.
Each person can probably have 3 or 4 pieces.

Deanna proposed Brett's idea to have a group show at the TCC Southeast Campus gallery. There's a large space and it can accommodate work from many of our past shows. He wants the theme to be encaustic materials and methods and suggested that we come up with a name that's descriptive fo that idea. So we brainstormed some names and decided to give them to Brett to decide the final one.

Update: Brett decided on a title - Encaustic Methods: TexasWAX/Dallas

He'll have dates and more info soon.

Janet reported on the Global Swarming show at the Texas Discovery Gardens. She's going to meet with them soon and will send out more information. Patty was going to contact someone she knows to get a quote on hexagon panels.

Carolyn is looking at the gallery schedule at Kilgore College and will try to get us a group show there. Possibly in December, but she'll get back to us with more info.

Charlotte reported on the New Mexico Wax show that she saw in Santa Fe. She said that the group there would like to have a show with us as well.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, May 24, at Ivonne Acero's studio - 3116 Commerce St, Suite E, Dallas.

I think your membership will want to know about some new events I'm offering this year. These are an Advanced Seminar and Retreat and an Intermediate Encaustic Workshop and Retreat where artists can have afternoons and evenings free to work on their own projects. In the AM we will learn new tricks, share and network. All in beautiful settings (Ghost Ranch and Santa Fe) with time to visit Santa Fe's world-class galleries, take walks and otherwise renew the spirit.

Please note that the Advanced Seminar is not a workshop at all, but more like an artist's residency with a peer-learning component. We set everything up, each person gets two big tables, and we provide the encaustic HotBox palette and other equipment, medium and beeswax (but not paint). Detailed information is on my website. In recent years, the ancient method of encaustic painting is Moore's medium of choice. This unique and dynamic technique incorporates pigmented bee's wax, which is heated, re-worked, etched or scuffed to achieve dimensional depth. As each layer cools, another can be applied, resulting in a radiant and complex terrain of light, color and texture.

Here's the hopeful conclusion:
“Big agriculture is not going to easily change, but we’re beginning to see people become interested in locally grown, locally consumed food, with less pesticide. I think there’s a tremendous move in the direction of sustainable agriculture, and the bee situation is only going to help push this forward.”

I'm optimistic that the change of administration is going to help our environment.

The prospectus will be sent out soon. This is the all TexasWAX show that will be at M2 Gallery in Houston in May. Theme is "Degrees." Interpret that however you'd like. More info in the prospectus.

Global Swarming -
The presentation/panel at the MAC went really well. Brandon and Susan Pollard of the Texas Honeybee Guild were fabulous. We had a great turnout and Liliana, the director of the MAC was very pleased.

An artist friend of mine sent me this comment in an email: "I heard the talk at the MAC was amazing. One of the art classes I attend for the Contemporary went to hear it and said it was very interesting. I am sorry I missed it."

Junanne reported that the show looks great. She will be bringing the work back to her house in Fort Worth after December 1st. We can pick up our work from her at our next meeting on December 14. If you need it sooner, contact Junanne to arrange to get it from her.

Janet brought information on a cabinet maker that she knows that is wanting to create some cradled panels for us. She is taking back some suggestions on sizes and prices and she'll get back with us.

New Mexico Wax -
Junanne shared an email that she'd received from Harriette Tsosie in New Mexico. She's founded New Mexico Wax! She said that she'd like to organize a regional show for Texas and New Mexico in the future. Exciting!

Our new member, Antoaneta, bravely asked for a critique of her first encaustic piece in progress.

Silvia talked about her show at The Haley-Henman Gallery in Dallas.

Junanne worked with a group of kids who created 80 canvasses for the Barney's windows at Northpark Mall.

Ivonne shared her experience as a resident artist at La Reunion a couple of weeks ago. She did encaustic with a group of girls. She said that there's a good possibility that our group could do something with them.

Vet will be teaching a class at Ghost Ranch next summer. Congratulations, Vet!

Linda suggested that we try to get a tent at the Spring Blooms at the Dallas Arboretum on March 21 & 22 next year. She's going to check on the deadlines and application information.

Some Like It Hot - Port Arthur

Thanks to our wonderful members, Junanne Peck and Darlyne Hartman, our Some Like It Hot exhibition traveled to Port Arthur, Texas. It opened this weekend at the Texas Artist's Museum.

The members of TexasWAX/Houston also participated, and Gwen Plunkett did an encaustic painting demonstration during the opening.

It sounds like the reception was a great success, and the work looks fabulous. (I'm going to work on putting names with all the images below.) Thanks to Gwen for the photos.

Thanks again to everyone who helped put this together. I'm continually amazed at the energy and enthusiasm of this group!

Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) is a phenomenon currently effecting honeybees. What is at hand appears to be a perfect storm created by pesticides, introduced pathogens, viruses and perhaps GMO foods. Research is ongoing in this critical area.

We had a great meeting at the Bath House today!

Let's see if I can remember who all was there:

We were joined by new members Jackie Chaiken, Nancy Lea, Juliana Robles, and Peggy Epner. Oh and some random guy named Paul who makes candles happened to be walking by and heard someone talking about wax. Junanne gave him her contact info, so if she goes missing, that's why. :-)

Some Like It Hot:
Junanne talked about the Some Like It Hot (now) touring exhibition. At least 4 people from the Houston group will be participating as well.

Junanne took the work that will be traveling on to the Texas Artists Museum in Port Arthur.

Here's the timeline:
*ASAP - submit your images to Junanne (even if you sent them to Janet prior to the Bath House show, please send them to Junanne), along with information on each piece - title, media, size, price
October 29 - deadline for work to be delivered to Junanne
October 31st - she will drive the work down to Port Arthur
November 1 - installation
November 9, 2:30 - 4:00 - reception - demo at 3 pm (someone from the Houston group will do the demo)
November 29 - Junanne will pick up the work from Port Arthur and take it to her studio in Fort Worth

Junanne has also secured a spot for the exhibition at the Firehouse Gallery in Fort Worth, Feb 9 - March 7th, 2009. We have the option to do a workshop or demo.

Global Swarming:
November 12, 2008 - we're still scheduled to do the panel discussion at the MAC - on the panel will be me, Janet, and 2 beekeepers. Hope everyone can make it! At that time we'll submit a proposal for the show for next year.

September, 2009 - the Global Swarming show will be on exhibit at the Texas Discovery Gardens in Fair Park during the fair. We can be a major part of the facility's opening celebration.

We can have a presentation of work at the same time at the MAC, along with possible talks and demos.

Degrees:
May 9 - May 31, 2009 at M2 Gallery in Houston .

Gwen from the Houston group has secured this show for the 4 TexasWAX groups. I'll be sending out the formal prospectus as soon as it's finalized.

The theme is "Degrees." Interpret that however you would like.

The Bee Team:
I shared information about The Bee Team, a group of Etsy sellers that I joined recently:

They have a blog as well.

So if you have any wax/encaustic work on Etsy, please join.

They are also working on a show dealing with Colony Collapse Disorder, so perhaps we can join forces with them at some point.

Just a reminder that the October meeting of TexasWAX/Dallas is Saturday, October 4, 11:00 - 1:00 at the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas.

We'll be picking up our work from the Some Like It Hot exhibition or passing it along to Junanne Peck, who secured a show for us at the Texas Artist Museum in Port Arthur, Texas. Thanks, Junanne! So that makes Some Like It Hot officially a touring exhibition. That's exciting! Oh, and the TexasWAX/Houston is participating, too, since they're so close to Port Arthur.

We met at Janet Reynolds' beautiful new home.

Joan Hart attended to find out about the group and Janet's friend Mar was also visiting.

We discussed the upcoming TexasWAX/Dallas show at the Bath House Cultural Center. We had decided on the title Some Like it Hot. Appropriate for Texas in August...

Important dates:
Sunday, July 27 - Janet needs your RSVP if you would like to be in the show. Send her up to 3 jpg images (72 dpi) with all the pertinent information (title, size, media, etc.) Ideally the work will have been completed within the last year. Work that you exhibited in our first show in February is acceptable. The only criteria is that it have wax in it in some way. The images can be of work in progress.

Our show is in conjunction with a show of women printmakers. Janet will contact them to find out if they will be serving alcohol during the reception (the Bath House has rules about serving alcohol and we'd like to just kind of piggy back on their setup if they're doing it).

The Bath House will handle press for the event. They don't do postcards any more, but I said that I would be willing to design a small jpg image that can be emailed with all the info. So I'll get that out to everyone soon.

I announced that Trayc and I will have a show in Denton at the Center for Visual Arts - Waxy Buildup: Cleaning House. The opening reception is Sunday, August 17.

We had an informal swap of some art supplies and other materials.

We talked a little about a possible theme for a future show dealing with the environment and the decline of the bees.

We also mentioned a possible retreat and I said I would check with Sharon in Austin. She's working on something for all 3 groups.

Then we watched the dvd Sister Bee, a short documentary about beekeeping. I met the filmmaker, Laura Tyler at the encaustic conference this year. She's also an artist who works in encaustic. Here's her blog, in case you're interested in checking out her work:

The meeting was held on Sunday, June 22 at Silvia Thornton's studio in Lakewood. In attendance were Silvia, Janet Reynolds, Vet, Robin Walker, and new member Mirtha Aertker who is a sculptor.

Janet announced that she has heard from Enrique at the Bath House in regards to our proposal for having a show there. Apparently we made it to the short list, but in an auspicious turn of events they had a group cancel, and we were asked to take the time slot. Janet spoke for all of us when she said YES! Consequently, Texas Wax Dallas has a show scheduled at the Bath House late August through Sept 2008. Dates and specifics will be furnished by Janet. What we know is that our show will run concurrently with a Women Printmaker's show. We need to name our exhibition, and it would be good to coordinate with the print show. Again, Janet will give us the details as soon as she finds out. In addition, we will soon need a decision on how many of our members will be participating in the show, and then determine how many pieces each exhibiting member will show.

In addition to the show itself, we talked about including a day-long demonstration of wax techniques by our members, via work stations set up in the space. Again, we agreed it would be best to see what the printmakers have scheduled in order to coordinate events to draw a larger crowd.

We also discussed the possibility of mounting a show at the MAC. Silvia said that she talked to the director there who seemed interested in our work. We spent a lot of time brainstorming ideas for this -- including ways to tie in our work with the environment, specifically the declining bee population worldwide. Janet has a contact who is a beekeeper - we could bring him in for a talk. Again, we agreed it was a good idea to provide some community outreach in the form of a demonstration and/or artist's talk.

Another idea: We discussed bringing unwanted (but perfectly good) art materials to our meetings for a "materials exchange". We all have items in our studios that we don't use or need, and this is a good way to recycle.

May 18, 2008 meeting

We gathered at Deanna's studio for a meeting and for some encaustic monotype fun.

I did a demo of the little that I know about monotypes, and Junanne showed a method that she had developed. Then everyone worked on a few experimental monotypes of their own.

Junanne announced that she sent a proposal to the Texas Artist's Museum in Port Arthur.

More discussion on creating a uniform proposal. I said I would edit the existing list that Janet had created for the Bath House proposal. I did, and it's on our Google Group site, under Files. It's a pdf file called "texas_wax_dallas_image_list.pdf" and there is also a zip file that includes everyone's resumes and statements, called "dallas_resumes_and_statements.zip" Feel free to use these to submit a group proposal should you come across a call that looks promising.

I need to get resumes and statements from our new members, so please email them to me and I'll get them added to our proposal information.

I reported on my trip to Houston where I met with Sharon Kyle-Kuhn from TexasWAX/Austin, and Gwen Plunkett and some other members from TexasWAX/Houston. We brainstormed about possible future exhibitions for the combined group and came up with this:
We will have a members' juried or curated show in March of 2009. Sharon will offer her gallery as the venue for the show. The theme will be "Degrees," and each artist will submit work that somehow interprets that theme. Sharon, Gwen, and I are still working on the details.

We had some discussion in our group about the size requirements for this show. Sharon, Gwen, and I had thought we might require 24" x 24" but the Houston group thought that was too much like "box shows" that are popular now (where all works are 12" x 12", for example). We proposed possibly just limiting the size to 96 square inches.

In our meeting, Silvia suggested creating work on "degrees" of that size - either 6" x 6", or 12" x 12", or 18" x 18", or 24" x 24".

So we'll figure that out. For now, just be thinking about "Degrees" and how you'll interpret it.

The International Encaustic Artists have 2 calls for entries listed on their website that are open to encaustic art.

I'll be heading to the Second National Encaustic Painting Conference in Massachusetts in June. I'll bring back lots of information to share with everyone!

A couple of weeks ago, I had to go to Houston to switch out some artwork at Koelsch Gallery, and I stayed with Gwen Plunkett while I was there.

We had a lovely time visiting and she was nice enough to schlep me all over Houston.

Sharon Kyle-Kuhn drove from Austin and met us and we visited the Menil, The Cy Twombly Gallery, The Rothko Chapel, and the Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum. We all got together at Cynthia Robertson's home with some other members of the TexasWAX/Houston group - Julia Koivumaa and Suzanne Shield-Polk.

We discussed possible future group exhibitions and everyone seemed to like the idea of having a group show (combined Houston/Dallas/Austin members) at Sharon's Bay6 Gallery in Austin in March of 2009.

We decided on the theme of "Degrees," with each artist creating a piece interpreting that theme in some way. We also want to get someone to curate or jury the show. We're working on the details of that now.

I really enjoyed hanging out with Gwen and meeting Sharon, Julia, Cynthia, and Suzanne. And it always amazes me how much art there is in Houston... I just wish my camera hadn't decided to delete all the pictures that I took there! Gwen's camera was being weird, too, and the picture above is the only photographic evidence that remains of the trip.

Wow. I swear that I blogged about our April meeting. Guess not...

So here's what happened:
We had a wonderful meeting at Junanne's studio in Fort Worth. Her home and studio are quite lovely. Even with golfers peeing in the woods. :-)

We spent most of the time making etchings on Plexiglas. Junanne walked us through the process and everyone made a great print.

We had a very short meeting and talked about possible exhibitions. Gwen has submitted a proposal in Houston, Sharon is working on getting the Austin group together and has possible exhibition space there, and we're waiting on the response from the BathHouse in Dallas.

Junanne and I will work together to come up with a generic proposal for the Dallas group that will be available to everyone to print out and submit to different venues.

As we left, Vet, who creates work with recycled materials, unloaded, I mean, donated a bunch of stuff to us - rocks, paper (no scissors!), black fuzzy folders... All kinds of good stuff.

one last look at the TexasWAX show at Collaborating Artists Media Projects...

The members of TexasWAX/Dallas met on March 16 at CAMP. We took down our work and then had a short meeting.

I didn't take great notes, but here's what I've got:

Participating members - Deanna Wood, Robin Walker, Cheryl McClure, Diane Dorn, Janet Reynolds, Junanne Peck, Franzi Bader, and Silvia Thornton. Shelly Thompson joined us to find out what we are all about.

Congratulations to Cheryl McClure. One of her pieces will be featured on the cover of Nita Leland's upcoming book.

Future exhibitions - Janet reported that the Bathhouse Cultural Center most likely won't get back to us until maybe April concerning the proposal that we submitted.

We briefly discussed approaching 14th Street Gallery in Plano and the MAC in Dallas. I'm going to a show at 14th Street soon, so I offered to speak with the gallery owner.

We also discussed the need for future shows to be curated or juried in some way - it's just more professional. Some possible juror/curator names were brought up.

TexasWAX Austin - I was contacted recently by Sharon Kyle Kuhn in Austin. She was interested in joining our group but I encouraged her to start her own "chapter" in Austin. And she did! She's just getting the blog started...

So there's a possibility of having some collaborative shows in Austin as well.

Upcoming encaustic classes - there's an R&F workshop in Boerne, Texas in May and October.

Also the 2nd Annual Encaustic Painting Conference in Massachusetts is coming up in June.

I got an email recently from Sharon Kyle Kuhn, an artist who lives in Austin. She works in encaustic and was interested in learning more about our group.

So I encouraged her to start a group in Austin!

She's set up a blog and is in the process of finding some members. So if you know anyone in Austin who works in encaustic or uses wax in their work, send them Sharon's way.

We're looking forward to another collaborative show and adding Austin to the mix is really exciting.

Opening Night

Our opening reception on Friday, February 22, was a great success! The people at CAMP really did it up nicely for us. They were extremely gracious and they put on a great spread. One really great touch was the video camera "hidden" in the main gallery space. It was streaming live video that was projected in another room (and someone said it was streaming on the internet, too, but I'm not sure about that).

We were extremely excited that several high-profile people from the "encaustic world" stopped by, including Joanne Mattera, author of The Art of Encaustic Painting; Richard Frumess of R&F Paints, and Kathryn Bevier of Enkaustikos Wax Art Supplies.

The show is up until March 16, so if you haven't seen it yet, please stop by and check it out!
